Let $P$ be a collection of points in $\mathbf R$ (usually a [[Lattice|lattice]]). A hole is a point of $\mathbf R$ whose distance to $P$ is a local maximum. A deep hole is a point of $\mathbf R$ whose distance to $P$ is the absolute maximum (if such exists).
