Definition

The definition currently given here is incomplete: the reals and complexes are local fields, and need to be taken as such to make sense of the Hasse principle, for example. In addition, the description of local fields in finite characteristic is obscure. It would be better to define a local field as being complete and locally compact with respect to a valuation.
