==Axiom or Theorem?==
I find it hard to believe that ''The axiom was proposed by Pappus (3rd century).''  I believe that Pappus enunciated it as a theorem of (Euclidean) geometry, and Heath's "History of Greek Mathematics" does not suggest otherwise.
