View source for Meta-mathematics

The totality of mathematical theories used in the study of formal theories (calculi). The meta-mathematics related to the study of a given formal theory forms the so-called [[Meta-theory|meta-theory]] of this formal theory.

In a narrow sense, the term  "meta-mathematics"  is also used as a synonym for [[Proof theory|proof theory]].
